Martha Rant
Did you know that more people are stressed out after watching Martha Stewart(51%) than after watching the nightly news (27%)? How could watching someone do crafts and cooking be more stressful than politics, crime and war? Looking closely at this syndrome, reveals that it is actually no big surprise.

Martha is a wonderful woman. Cheerful, wise, practical, creative all rolled into one. Viewers see her as a perfect woman. I am sure she is not perfect, but she has cultivated this perfect image as she cultivates sugar beets in her garden. In her 30 minute show she manages to steam an artichoke, make a rasberry trellis, and sews silverware holders out of flannel. This is no joke.

After watching this who wouldn't feel lazy, and generally inadequate? The Martha Stewart image is NOT reality, it is pure fiction that masquerades as reality. Unmask her! Have you ever seen Martha make a mistake, spill a drink, or cut her finger?

The Messy Gourmet tries hard to spread the antidote (not available in capsule form) for the Martha Syndrome. We are not perfect, we make mistakes, we make messes, and cut ourselves once in a while. The great thing about it is that we take it in stride, laugh a little and have fun. You'll live longer without the stress. So petition your TV station for less stressful shows. Enlightened TV producers can contact us!
