An Udder Mess Contributed by Sue Woodcock |
Once upon a time, when my last daughter was a teenager, she gave me a pair of white jeans to wash. I put them into the wash and when they were done, I put them in the dryer. Now this dryer was old and only had two temperatures, cool and super hot. I set them on super hot. After about 20 minutes I went downstairs to the dryer from HELL and took the dry jeans out.
Big mistake!
Rule #1: ALWAYS check the child, teenager or husband's pant pockets before washing.
Lo and behold, melted Hershey chocolate all over the white jeans. The jeans looked like a cow and the dryer was covered in cooked chocolate. I first addressed the dryer. Washing and drying it only took half a day. Then I tackled the jeans. I had two choices, pretend the dryer ate them or buy her a new pair. The problem was I didn't know who made the jeans because the label was covered in brown chocolate. So, I decided to wash them again. This time I poured liquid Tide on them and also poured a lot into the pockets. I dumped more Tide into the washer and then washed them in cold water. I sat and prayed next to the washing machine. When they were done, I couldn't believe it, not a spot of brown candy on them! I put the wet jeans in the dryer for about 10 minutes, repeating my prayers. Out came a perfect looking pair of jeans. I was so happy! It only took about 7 hours to accomplish this.
That night my cute little teenager asked me if I had seen her candy bar. Playing dumb, I asked her where she might have left it. No surprise, she said that she had left it in the pocket of her white jeans. I replied, "Well I checked the pockets and ate it."
The moral of this story is check the pockets, try to fix the oops (with lots of detergent), and laugh about it.
PS: Rub the detergent on the garment stains before you wash it.
