A cucumber is essentially water (95%) that packs a
wonderful crunch. Aaah... the crunch of a cucumber
sandwich.
Can't afford a day at the spa? Buy a cucumber instead.
Cucumbers are great for your complexion.
To diminish bags or puffiness under your eyes, place
thin cucumber slices on your closed eyelids for a few
minutes. The cucumber's astringent qualities reduce the
puffiness.
For an acne remedy, put a cucumber in a blender, whip
it up, apply to skin and leave for 20
minutes before washing off.
If you find cucumbers too bland ...try a pickle!
Pickling a cucumber adds a hefty crunch with a sour
garlicky bite. To a pickle enthusiast, the
transformation of cucumber into pickle is reminiscent
of the caterpillar morphing into a butterfly.
There are lots of cucumber enthusiasts claiming that
cucumbers are better than men. We feel that the
comparison is unfair since only one is edible (??)
Here are reasons why cucumbers are better than beer.
- Cucumbers won't give you a hangover.
- Cucumbers have fewer calories.
- Your spouse won't complain about you sitting around
all day watching TV and eating cucumbers.
- You can grow your own cucumbers without buying lots of
equipment.
- Your spouse won't complain that your breath stinks of
cucumbers.
- You can eat as many cucumbers as you like, and drive
home later.
- You can open a cucumber using only your teeth.
- Having your face slashed with a cucumber doesn't hurt
(much).
- You can eat the whole cucumber, skin 'n' all.
- A cucumber won't shatter if you drop it on the ground.
- You can shake up a cucumber, and it won't explode when
you bite it.
- You don't have to worry about getting cucumber stains
on your clothes.
Cool cucumber factoids:
- The cucumber is technically a fruit, as it comes from
the fruit part of the plant.
- Cucumbers are related to watermelons
- Just like its cousin the zucchini, cucumbers can be
sauteed, steamed, broiled or baked.
- The Emperor Tiberias of Rome was a cucumber fanatic
swearing by a cucumber a day.
- Columbus introduced the cuke to America.
Tirza C. has this cuke tip:
Most cucumbers need to be scraped or peeled as they
have a waxy coating and a bitter taste.
The waxy coating keeps the moisture in and prevents
spoilage.
The English cucumber, which is sold encased in a plastic wrap, does
not have a waxy coating and as such the peels do not
have to be scraped. The kirby cucumber is also a
waxless cuke.
